Over 4 companies in about 20 years, half of the time we were under Clinical Operations and half were under Technical Operations.

Both have pros and cons, and often we saw a hiring bias for more experience in the area to which the team reported. This meant that we often had folks that were less knowledgeable in one side of the house than the other and had to be very diligent about communication and knowledge sharing.

The only non-optimized scenario was when commercial and clinical supply reported into different organizations because we were doing very similar things in many cases and didn’t get the chance to share vendors, systems or processes. It would have been much more efficient in that case to have us report into Tech Ops instead of Clin Ops. But for small companies that are not commercial yet that seems to matter a lot less as there is just a single clinical focused supply team.
