HTS is used globally, but only the first 6 digits are uniform across all the countries. Some countries use a total of 8 and others a total of 10, with the last set of digits being completely unique to each country. Typically, you need to list the code for the exporting country on your invoice, and if it is not the same in the importing country, the Importer of Record will be asked to provide a proper code for their side of the transaction during their customs clearance process. Depending on the countries involved you may need to list both the exporting code and the importing code for each commodity on the same invoice. In these cases, you would likely be shipping to a country that requires a “green light to ship” so you can get the importing code from the IoR during that process and then just put it in parentheses along with the country abbreviation on the invoice.
