That sounds like the correct process to me. When I did it, I had a clear label stock. So the expiry extension label proof had three components.
– a line that, when placed on the existing booklet cover would overlay/line out the current expiry
– The new Expiry date in MM YYYY format
– Also the repeat printed lot # (I did not end up changing the lot # as it sounds like you might be doing, but still was required to have the lot repeat on the overlabel, even if no change).

Would be interested to hear other’s experience as well, or if my explanation has any holes in it, please let me know. Will try to clarify.
